Threads ARE NOT USUALLY open in this forum. To file a protest use ALWAYS the Protest Editor, if the protest references a saved race use the link provided in the Results/Replays option for that race. If the protest cannot be referenced by a racelet use the Editor from the Protest Room option, Thank you.

It was not 100% clear to me you didn't have room at the mark, it would have been better if you called for room instead of raising the penalty flag.
Especially since because no foul had occurred yet at that time.

Hi Tony,

There is nothing in the rules to say he must hail anything here. (The only times you must hail are for rule 20 and also to protest someone). It is implied in the rule 18 that, if he is entitled to mark room, you are obliged to give it.

Clearly there is an overlap here. The rules engine (RE for short) is usually is good on these, and draws a line between 2 boats that enter overlapped. However it got this one wrong, and for whatever reason did not 'see' the overlap that was present.

The RE is prone to errors occasionally, and it is up to us to figure out when it does a bad call. Next time, if you see an overlap like this, best be safe and give room whether or not the RE agrees.

Tony is new to team racing, so I would go gently on him. There was an overlap, so Wib had rights to mark room.

Both boats approaching mark 3. Both of the on starboard. Tony_F18 enters the zone first, but inside overlap exist with Wibroe (thx bigNeil for the pic).

18.2 Giving Mark-Room
(b) If boats are overlapped when the first of them reaches the zone, the outside boat at that moment shall thereafter give the inside boat mark-room. If a boat is clear ahead when she reaches the zone, the boat clear astern at that moment shall thereafter give her mark-room.

According to r18.2(b) Wibroe is entitled to mark-room and mark-room is:

Room for a boat to sail to the mark, and then room to sail her proper course while at the mark. However, mark-room does not include room to tack unless the boat is overlapped to windward and on the inside of the boat required to give mark-room.

Tony_F18 fails to provide room for Wibroe to sail to the mark (Including clearing her boom from touching the mark).

What do you think Tony?

I thought there was enough room at the time, just noticed there is a windshift as well which made the not so big gap a little smaller as well. I will try to leave some more room next time.
After rounding the mark Wibroe does take too much room though.

Thx Tony. I see what you mean about Wibroe taking to much room when rounding. However, I am not sure that the collision with you affected the way he could round. I think it we take the last point of certainty, you'd agree that you break r18.2(b) and thus we cannot properly evaluate if Wibroe was fully in control when rounding.

IMO Tony_F18 breaks r18.2(b). Does not spin to exonerate. DSQ (-300)

http://www.sailx.com/forum/9-teams/93566...cing-protests-#93566

When filing team racing protests, will you please use the following format:

Protester vs. Protestee, Rule, Description(if you wish)

Frodo vs. Okole, Rule 17, Okole sails above PC.

The reason for this is because it is very annoying to navigate our way through the protest room and forum, especially now as the TR'ing event is on and there are floods of TR'ing protests in. It is annoying to navigate through because there are now a load of protests that are called exactly the same thing, ie r13 or R15 or whatever. There is no info in these titles and makes life much more awkward than it should.

PLEASE use the format I have above.
